The fruit has long been associated with folk medicine and treatments throughout the Phillipines and Malaya, with recent discoveries into mainstream health benefits. There are many ingredients in the mangosteen that have been noted as beneficial; however, the most prominent and beneficial of the 40 xanthones in the mangosteen, is mangostin. From the botanical ingredients noted in the mangosteen, the xanthone mangostin, an antioxidant, has scientific backing as having antibacterial, antiseptic and fungicidal properties, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer effects.
Although xanthones have been around for over 150 years, there is little definitive evidence linking them with any type of major disease fighting qualities; especially as there are only 19 published medical articles involving xanthones, and none of them with any clinical focus on human disease.
XanGo mangosteen has been used in some studies for its cancer preventive effects, and was shown in a handful of isolated cases to assist in combating the disease, adding the fruit to the long list of naturally derived substances that could possibly have anti cancer benefits. |
