Herbalife Appoints New VP To Product Safety

Herbalife Ltd., a network marketing company that sells weight management, nutritional supplement, energy, sports and fitness products, and personal care products, has appointed Andrew Shao as vice president of global product science and safety, effective March 7, 2011.

Shao joins the company from the Council of Responsible Nutrition, a trade association representing dietary supplement manufacturers and ingredient suppliers, where he led scientific and regulatory affairs.

He will be responsible for assuring that all products sold by Herbalife are safe, meet regulatory safety requirements, and that all product claims are scientifically supportable, ensuring Herbalife's leadership position in the industry.

He'll report to Dr Vasilios (Bill) Frankos, former FDA director, division of dietary supplements programs, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), who joined the company last April.

Before serving at CRN, Shao was a senior scientist at General Nutrition Corporation (GNC), and previously, in R&D at Kemin Health (formerly Kemin Foods).
