Viridian Energy Releases 2nd Edition of The Green Energy Observer

NORWALK, Conn., May 21, 2012 -- Viridian Energy, a leading provider of affordable, green energy, today released the second edition of its energy industry report, The Green Energy Observer. The periodical report offers a comprehensive look at the power of deregulation and consumer choice through the perspective of the nation's leading provider of green retail energy, Viridian.

While the first edition of The Green Energy Observer focused on the growing trend of renewable energy, specifically wind energy, this edition focuses on providing a visual representation of how consumer choice can have large economic and environmental effects. Within the publication, two scenarios are given to demonstrate these results. Scenario one shows if all customers who have already chosen an independent energy supplier also chose a 20% green energy plan, 196 billion pounds of carbon emissions would be avoided -- the equivalent of removing 17.5 million passenger vehicles from roadways. Scenario two shows that 378 billion pounds of carbon emissions would be avoided if every eligible customer chose a 20% green energy plan.

"As an industry leader, we are proud to differentiate ourselves from our competitors by creating something tangible to give to consumers to show them the power of their energy choices," said Michael Fallquist, founder and CEO of Viridian Energy. "Most people know that choosing greener energy has a positive impact on the environment, but they do not realize the significance of these decisions on a large, collective scale. We could accomplish so much more as a country if more people made more environmentally responsible choices. The visual representations in our report help tell the story of consumer choice in a deregulated market, making the information easy to understand, and empowering others to make greener choices."

The report provides a look at the impact of renewable energy on the U.S. economy. Viridian outlines the potential economic improvements that would occur if 10% of the U.S. electricity supply came from renewable sources by 2020. Electricity bills would be lowered by $22.6 billion, and 91,220 new jobs would be available--twice as many as from generating the electricity from fossil fuels. Also included are facts on the economic impact of the U.S. Treasury's 1603 renewable energy grant program. Between 2009 and 2011, the grant has provided 75,000 jobs, created 23,000 new solar and large wind projects, and had an economic output of $44 billion.

In addition to industry news and the power of energy deregulation, The Green Energy Observer highlights Viridian's commitment to supporting and advancing local and global sustainability. For Viridian's second year of its "7 Continents in 7 Years," corporate leaders and sales Associates traveled to Ghana, West Africa to install reliable solar power for rural schools, a health clinic and a community library. These innovative technologies generate the electricity needed to power LED lanterns for students to rent and take home and pharmaceutical refrigeration for local villagers.
